A small aircraft tragedy struck a neighborhood in San Diego on Thursday morning when a Cessna 550 crashed into a residential street, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The crash, which occurred in the Murphy Canyon area, led to the destruction of one home and damage to ten other buildings, as reported by local authorities.
Emergency responders noted that eight people on the ground sustained minor injuries; one individual was transported to the hospital, while the remaining were treated at the scene. Approximately 100 residents were evacuated from the vicinity for safety reasons, highlighting the potential danger posed by the incident.
“There's plane debris everywhere,” remarked Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy, as he described the chaotic scene. He pointed out that the impact of the crash resulted in widespread destruction, with a “direct hit to multiple homes.” Fortunately, it was reported that no serious injuries occurred among the occupants of the affected residences.
Eyewitness footage captured the aftermath, showing charred vehicles strewn across the street. Local resident Christopher Moore recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that he and his family were jolted awake by a loud explosion. Upon looking outside, they saw billowing smoke, prompting them to quickly evacuate with their young children. “It was definitely horrifying… but you have to prioritize safety,” he said.
Another individual living nearby mentioned hearing a peculiar whistling noise, followed by a loud explosion that shook his home. Authorities indicated that the aircraft appeared to be en route to Montgomery Field, an airport situated about 10 kilometers northeast of downtown San Diego at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to uncover the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
