Destruction and despair unfold in Kentucky and Missouri following devastating tornadoes.
At least 25 people have been confirmed dead following a violent wave of tornadoes that swept across parts of Kentucky and Missouri, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in their wake. Kentucky has reported 18 fatalities, while Missouri has confirmed seven, with the city of St. Louis bearing the brunt of the destruction. The tornado hit Laurel County, Kentucky, in the early morning hours of Saturday, and officials fear that the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue.
In Missouri, the storms caused extensive damage, impacting around 5,000 structures, knocking down roofs and power lines, and plunging approximately 140,000 properties into darkness. Fire crews in St. Louis have undertaken house-to-house searches in the hardest-hit areas, where at least 38 injuries have been reported, primarily from collapsing structures and fallen trees. The mayor of St. Louis, Cara Spencer, emphasized the dire circumstances, highlighting that one of the injured had succumbed to their injuries after a church collapse.
Authorities have placed a curfew in effect from 9 PM to 6 AM in the severely affected regions to mitigate further injuries from debris and to deter looting. "The loss of life and the destruction is truly, truly horrendous," stated Spencer, acknowledging the immense challenges ahead for the community.
The US National Weather Service noted that Illinois also faced tornado threats, with severe weather warnings extending towards the Atlantic coast. The Midwest region, often referred to as "Tornado Alley," has a history of tornado occurrences, particularly during late spring and early summer. Kentucky averages five tornadoes each May, while Missouri sees approximately 16, according to historical data.
Officials and residents now confront the daunting task of recovery and rebuilding as they rally in the aftermath of this tragic weather event.
