Gulf Diplomacy Takes Center Stage Amid India-Pakistan Conflict

As tensions between India and Pakistan escalate over accusations of terrorism, Gulf states are stepping up diplomatic efforts to mediate the conflict, hoping to stabilize the region amid global uncertainty.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations are intensifying diplomatic interventions to ease rising tensions between India and Pakistan, which have escalated significantly following a terror attack in Kashmir. India has accused Pakistan of involvement in the April 22 attack, leading to retaliatory airstrikes by India on Pakistani positions. With the United States largely absent from these negotiations, diplomatic engagement from Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, is becoming increasingly crucial.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir has already met with officials in both New Delhi and Islamabad as part of these efforts. The Gulf states have historically played a role in brokering peace between the two South Asian rivals, leveraging their strong economic ties and mutual interests. Millions of Indian expatriates in the Gulf enhance India's robust relationship with the region, while Pakistan enjoys significant military and security partnerships, especially with Saudi Arabia.

The backdrop of this conflict is not new; previous escalations have seen similar Gulf interventions. In 2019, for instance, following India’s airstrikes in response to Kashmiri tensions, both Saudi Arabia and the UAE sent key diplomats to help mitigate the crisis. Past successful mediations led to a ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control in Kashmir, showing the potential influence of Gulf negotiations.

Experts assert that the Gulf states perceive their mediatory role as a means to enhance their regional prestige while also safeguarding their interests amid the volatile geopolitical landscape.
