Actor expresses gratitude for family support as he prepares for new season.
Euphoria star Eric Dane has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative neurological condition that primarily affects motor neurons. The 52-year-old actor spoke to People about his health, stating, "I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week." He also expressed gratitude for his supportive family as they face this significant chapter of his life and requested privacy during this time.
Dane is well known for his role as Cal Jacobs, the Jacobs family patriarch in the hit HBO series Euphoria, which is set to begin production on its third season shortly. Before his tenure on Euphoria, Dane gained fame as Dr. Mark Sloan on the long-running series Grey's Anatomy, as well as for his roles in Charmed and The Last Ship, in addition to starring in films like Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, and Burlesque. He shares his life with actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he has two children.
ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rare but serious condition characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons, leading to progressive paralysis. Symptoms often include initial muscle weakness or twitching, which can escalate to difficulties in speech, eating, walking, and breathing. The disease has no known cure, and those diagnosed typically face a life expectancy of three to five years, though some have been known to survive for much longer periods. The Muscular Dystrophy Association continues to research potential treatments and the underlying causes of the disease.
