The haunting aftermath of the Jet Set music venue catastrophe continues to unfold as the family of police lieutenant Virgilio Rafael Cruz Aponte has officially filed charges against the nightclub's owners following the incident last week, which resulted in the loss of 231 lives. The venue was packed during a popular merengue concert when the structure's roof collapsed, trapping many inside.
The Cruz Aponte family, taking the first legal steps, has accused Antonio Espaillat, the nightclub owner, and the managers of manslaughter, adding that they also believe local government officials failed in their responsibilities to enforce safety regulations. With the public outcry intensifying, several other families of victims have expressed intentions to pursue similar legal actions.
As rescue operations concluded, Interior Minister Faride Raful confirmed the grim tally of deaths had risen due to injuries sustained in the collapse, with many of the injured facing long recoveries. Of the 189 individuals rescued, numerous survived the chaos despite witnessing horrific scenes unfold around them. Renowned merengue artist Rubby Pérez and several band members tragically perished, while Pérez’s daughter, Zulinka, was fortunate to escape alive.
The international dimension of this tragedy has been acknowledged, as the U.S. State Department reported that several American citizens were among the deceased.
