Mass Jailbreak in Karachi: Over 200 Inmates Escape Amid Earthquake Chaos

A dramatic prison break unfolds as over 200 inmates flee following a powerful earthquake in Karachi, triggering chaos and fears of a security crisis.

In a startling turn of events, more than 200 inmates escaped from the Malir Jail in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, following an earthquake that rocked the area early Tuesday. As tremors shook the prison, thousands of inmates reportedly broke down their cell doors, smashed windows, and charged towards the main gates in a panicked rush to flee. Police confirmed that of those who escaped, around 80 have since been recaptured, while efforts continue to locate over 130 others still on the loose. Tragically, one inmate lost their life during the ensuing chaos, and two prison guards sustained injuries.

The prison superintendent recounted how inmates began shouting in fear for their lives as the shaking intensified around midnight, prompting the wild escape. While many prisoners returned to their cells after police fired warning shots into the air, a significant number took advantage of the confusion to break free. The facility, already housing more than double its capacity with approximately 5,000 inmates compared to the intended 2,200, is now facing increased scrutiny. The provincial prison minister, Ali Hassan Zardari, has initiated an investigation into the incident, promising strict action against any officers found negligent. Families outside the jail have expressed outrage over postponed visitations, as the community grapples with the aftermath of both the natural disaster and the prison escape.

In summary, a powerful earthquake has led to a mass breakout at a Karachi jail, raising significant concerns about security and the management of overcrowded facilities. Police continue to pursue escaped inmates while the incident has sparked protests from frustrated families.
