ICE's Aggressive Raids Under Trump Target a Broad Spectrum of Migrants

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ramped up its operations to include detentions of migrants with no criminal records, sparked protests, and resulted in the arrest of tourists and political activists alike, highlighting the controversial nature of current immigration enforcement strategies.

The Trump administration's immigration enforcement strategy has expanded significantly since President Donald Trump's inauguration, veering away from its initial focus on criminal offenders to include a wider range of undocumented migrants, tourists, and student activists. On the campaign trail, Trump pledged to initiate the "largest deportation programme of criminals in the history of America," a promise that resonated with many voters concerned about immigration.

As of early June, approximately 51,000 undocumented migrants were held in ICE detention, the highest figure recorded since 2019. The administration claims these operations target public safety threats, but data suggests that over 44% of those detained had no criminal history beyond their immigration status. Protests erupted in parts of Los Angeles after an ICE raid captured 118 individuals, with officials labeling them as "the worst of the worst." However, many families reported that arrested individuals included those with clean records.

Among them were a Welsh tourist held for 19 days due to a visa issue, and popular TikTok star Khaby Lame, detained for overstaying a visa. Both, along with other foreign nationals like actress Jasmine Mooney, reported inhumane conditions and distressing experiences while in custody.

The administration has also targeted individuals from Central America under controversial policies, including the deportation of alleged gang members from El Salvador, despite claims from family members disputing their affiliation. Moreover, detentions have even reached student activists engaged in protests, many of whom are green card holders or possess valid student visas, further exacerbating tensions surrounding Trump's immigration policies.

Critics argue that ICE's actions violate legal boundaries and target innocent people, with advocates voicing concerns over the increasing number of students and activists arrested since Trump's presidency.
