Nigerian Military Strikes: Major Blow to Bandit Gangs in Zamfara
Air force operations in north-west Nigeria reportedly eliminate numerous armed gang members involved in kidnapping activities.
The Nigerian air force has announced a successful operation that has reportedly resulted in the deaths of numerous armed bandits operating in Zamfara state. According to military sources, air strikes were conducted in Makakkari forest, a known hideout for these criminal groups believed to be behind various high-profile kidnappings in the area.
The military action was initiated following surveillance that detected over 400 gang members preparing to launch an attack on a nearby village. In a worrying trend, armed gangs in the region have recently targeted settlements, leading to numerous casualties, and at least 13 security personnel have also lost their lives in the process.
Military spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame confirmed that the aerial strikes, executed in coordination with ground attacks, resulted in the deaths of several notorious bandit leaders along with a significant number of their associates. Ground forces also successfully intercepted and neutralized those attempting to flee the area.
Kidnapping for ransom has increasingly become a lucrative enterprise for bandits, which has been further exacerbated by their collaboration with jihadist organizations battling in the northeast for over 16 years. Although the military has carried out multiple operations against these gangs, including a previous campaign last month that claimed 95 bandit lives, violence continues to be rampant in many areas.
