Jamie Foxx Opens Up About His Stroke Experience in 2023
Jamie Foxx shares his journey of recovery after suffering a stroke well hidden from the public eye.
Hollywood star Jamie Foxx has bravely opened up about the medical crisis he faced in April 2023, shedding light on the details surrounding his hospitalization. During his Netflix special, "Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was...," recorded in Atlanta while he was working, the acclaimed actor revealed that he had suffered a "brain bleed that led to a stroke." Foxx recounted that what started as a severe headache culminated in him losing consciousness, leading to a baffling 20-day memory blackout.
Previously, his family had only described the episode as a "medical complication." However, Foxx shared that after an inconclusive initial assessment, his sister Deidra sensed something was wrong and rushed him to Piedmont Hospital. There, a doctor informed him of the urgency of his condition: “If I don't go in his head right now, we're going to lose him.” Emotional prayers from his sister filled the air while he underwent surgery, which was a race against time to ascertain the origin of the brain bleed.
Reflecting on the surreal experience, Foxx noted that instead of the typical "life flashing before your eyes" moment during the critical time, he instead encountered a strangely serene tunnel - joking about the experience being hot and wondering if he was heading to the wrong destination. Doctors cautioned his family about the grueling road ahead to recovery, predicting it could be "the worst year of his life."
Amidst the struggle, Foxx praised the steadfastness of his sister and daughter, Corinne, emphasizing their protective nature in shielding the family’s turmoil from public scrutiny. Despite his pride in being a resilient figure, he candidly admitted his initial denial about suffering a stroke, insisting to himself that “Jamie Foxx don’t get strokes." After awakening in a wheelchair on May 4, 2023, without understanding how he got there, he faced the reality of his condition and embarked on rehabilitation in Chicago.
Prior to the medical emergency, Foxx was diligently working on Netflix's "Back In Action" alongside Cameron Diaz. Since surmounting the ordeal, he has expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his family for their unwavering support throughout his recovery journey.
