In a bizarre twist to a jewelry heist, Orlando police have successfully recovered two sets of Tiffany & Co. earrings valued at nearly $770,000, after they were allegedly swallowed by the thief. The 32-year-old suspect, identified as Jaythan Gilder, was apprehended on February 26 following the theft at a Tiffany & Co. store, where he had been posing as an assistant to an NBA player.
According to police reports, Gilder managed to distract employees in a VIP room to access the high-end jewelry before fleeing the store with the earrings. During his escape, he also dropped a diamond ring worth $587,000. Upon apprehension, law enforcement observed Gilder ingesting what they believed were the stolen items. This set off a unique and prolonged recovery effort involving hospital observation.
Detective Aaron Goss of the Orlando Police Department indicated that the case evolved into a protracted saga, noting they monitored Gilder closely for more than two weeks until the earrings were finally expelled. An x-ray confirmed the presence of foreign objects consistent with the stolen jewelry, leading to their recovery on March 12.
Upon their return to Tiffany's, the store's master jeweller verified that the serial numbers matched those of the stolen pieces. Now, Gilder faces multiple charges, including first-degree grand theft and robbery with a mask. Officials noted that Gilder has a record, including a robbery at a Texas Tiffany & Co. and a staggering 48 outstanding warrants in Colorado. Currently, Gilder is in custody and awaiting further legal action.
