Pope Francis Announces 'Period of Trial' Amid Health Recovery
The Pontiff thanks supporters and addresses concerns over his health following pneumonia treatment in a Rome hospital.
Pope Francis has expressed that he is undergoing a "period of trial" as he continues to recover from pneumonia, having been hospitalized since February 14. In a recent message, the 88-year-old Argentine pontiff thanked supporters for their prayers and referenced Biblical verses, calling for peace in nations suffering from conflict. This marks the fifth consecutive Sunday the Pope has not appeared in person for his weekly audience, although officials from the Vatican reported that an X-ray indicated "improvements" in his condition, while acknowledging the necessity for ongoing medical care.
"The Holy Father still requires hospital treatment including motor and respiratory physiotherapy, which are gradually showing improvements," the Vatican stated. Since his admission to the Gemelli hospital in Rome, the Pope has been dealing with complications from double pneumonia and has faced several respiratory crises, raising concerns for his health.
In today's statement, he expressed solidarity with others facing illness: "I join with many brothers and sisters who are sick: fragile, at this time, like me." He urged continuous prayers for peace in war-torn areas such as Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Following his hospitalization, an audio recording featuring Pope Francis's voice was played in St. Peter's Square, where he expressed gratitude to the faithful for their support. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he was the first Pope hailing from the Americas and has a history of respiratory issues, including a partial lung removal due to pleurisy earlier in life.
Despite his health challenges, there are no current plans for the Pope to resign, as stated by close friends and biographers. He continues to manage his papal responsibilities from his hospital bed, especially significant as 2025 is set to be a Catholic Holy Year, attracting millions of pilgrims to Rome.
