In brief

A boat capsized in the Red Sea due to a sudden large wave, leading to an ongoing search operation for the missing, with remarkable tales of survival emerging amongst the chaos.

Amidst a somber atmosphere in the coastal town of Marsa Alam, Egypt, rescue teams are tirelessly working on Tuesday as they search for 16 missing individuals following the tragic capsizing of a tourist boat on Monday. The vessel was caught off guard by a large wave during a diving expedition, resulting in the dangerous incident. According to Egyptian authorities, local and military rescue operations successfully saved 28 passengers, comprising both tourists and crew members. The rescued individuals, mostly with minor injuries, were provided accommodation in a local hotel for recuperation. The ill-fated boat had embarked on its journey from Marsa Alam the previous Sunday, setting off for a six-day diving adventure that was due to conclude in the popular resort of Hurghada. These waters are beloved by divers and snorkelers, offering opportunities to explore vibrant coral reefs resilient to climate change and to swim with unique marine life like dugongs and dolphins. The boat, named Sea Story, had on board 44 passengers, including 13 Egyptians and 31 international tourists from nations such as the United States, Belgium, the UK, China, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and Switzerland. Of those unaccounted for, the reports indicate that four are Egyptian, while the remaining 12 are foreign nationals. Early Tuesday, local media cited the recovery of three bodies, although this information had not been confirmed independently. Reports indicate that the Egyptian Meteorological Authority had issued warnings of high waves before the boat's departure, raising questions concerning whether the crew had acknowledged these alerts in advance. Witness accounts describe a sudden, powerful wave colliding with the 111-foot vessel early on Monday morning, overturning it within mere minutes and leaving some passengers trapped in their cabins. Community residents noted rough sea conditions preceding the accident, and the first distress call to authorities was made at approximately 5:30 a.m. Some passengers were rescued by a nearby diving vessel, while others were located by the Egyptian Navy. Maj. Gen. Amr Hanafy, governor of the Red Sea province, confirmed that the Sea Story had successfully passed a safety inspection earlier in March and reported no technical faults. An investigation into the incident is currently underway as the search for the missing individuals continues.
