In brief

A 36‑year‑old British mother attempted to rescue her two sons from a powerful current off Bimini in the Bahamas, but she was swept away and later died at a local clinic. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed no foul play and will conduct an autopsy. The incident highlights the hazardous reef currents near Bimini and underscores the need for enhanced safety measures for swimmers and snorkelers.

A 36‑year‑old mother from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire tragically lost her life on Tuesday while attempting to save her two sons after a powerful current swept them into the sea near the southern tip of Bimini, the Bahamas.

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the mother, along with her husband and their children, were snorkeling when a sudden wave surged and carried the boys several yards out. In a desperate bid to reach them, she dove into the water, only to be lured by the same current that had taken her sons.

She was rescued and taken to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where emergency responders performed CPR. Despite their efforts, a local doctor pronounced her deceased at the clinic. Police have ruled out foul play and are conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The Foreign Office has expressed its condolences and is coordinating with local authorities to support the family during this difficult time.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the hazardous reef currents that can suddenly surge off Bimini’s waters, urging better precautionary measures for anyone engaging in water‑based activities in the region.
