During a recent visit to Bulgaria, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Nayef Al Saud met with President Iliana Iotova, as reported by BTA, to discuss the growing partnership between the two countries. The meeting, attended by Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, set a tone of optimism over future cooperation in a range of areas.
President Iotova described Saudi Arabia as a “strategic partner” for Bulgaria, noting that enhanced security collaboration could provide a foundation for broader engagement across trade, technology, and innovation. She emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in the Strait of Hormuz, citing ongoing tensions in the Persian Gulf and their potential to disrupt global supply chains.
“The Kingdom’s key role as a stable factor in efforts to normalize and de‑escalate the situation in the region is one of the pillars that we cherish,” Iotova said, underscoring the mutual interest in safeguarding freedom of navigation.
Prospects for innovation and technology collaborations
Iotova called attention to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, saying it presented “considerable potential for expanding bilateral cooperation in innovation.” She pointed out that Saudi’s modernization drive offers a platform for Bulgarian companies specializing in artificial intelligence and high‑technology to participate in large‑scale development projects.
The former president also expressed Bulgaria’s interest in Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment Initiative, a forum that facilitates interactions between public and private sectors. By joining the initiative, Bulgarian firms could gain access to emerging markets and investment opportunities within the Kingdom.
Expanding connectivity and cultural ties
Establishing a direct air link between Sofia and Riyadh was highlighted as a tangible step toward increased business, tourism, and cultural exchange. Iotova said that a regular flight schedule would “create new opportunities for business, tourism and cultural exchange between the two countries, which have a long history.”
Prince Abdulaziz conveyed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s congratulations to President Iotova on her election, expressing optimism that the two nations would deepen their ties and that Bulgaria was “an important and reliable partner.” The prince also reiterated his invitation for a future visit to Bulgaria.
The Interior Ministry of Bulgaria announced that the countries were stepping up cooperation in security and internal affairs, a move that could encompass joint training exercises, intelligence sharing, and coordinated efforts to counter transnational threats.
While concrete agreements were not signed in the meeting, both sides reiterated a commitment to explore detailed arrangements in the coming months. Iotova reiterated her invitation to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for an official Bulgarian visit, signaling the openness on the Bulgarian side to expand diplomatic engagement further.
Uncertainty remains about when specific initiatives such as a direct air service or joint technology projects will be formalized. The BTA notes that, as of the report, no definitive agreements have been announced, and the discussion remains at an exploratory stage.
