Mijain, a Cuban documentary chronicling Olympian Mijain López’s quest for a fifth gold medal, premiered at Havana’s International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in 2025 and has since been touring 14 countries worldwide after earning an Honorable Mention at Milan’s International Sports Cinema Festival.

Filmmaker Rolando Almirante emphasized the film’s role as a window into Cuba’s sporting and anthropological landscape, saying that participating in an international film festival provides a way for audiences worldwide to see “other realities of Cuba.”

Having the opportunity to see these other realities of Cuba is a prize in itself.

Almirante, who co‑directed the feature‑length documentary with Ángel Alderete and sports journalist Héctor Villar, highlighted the unique trajectory of the film’s festival circuit, noting that the 44th International Festival of the Federation of Sports Cinema and Television in Milan is accompanied by a tour that reaches Nepal, Serbia, Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic, and additional countries across Africa, Latin America and Europe.

The documentary follows López, an undefeated champion approaching the peak of a legendary career, as he prepares to challenge for a fifth Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games. Its synopsis describes a close look at the rigors of training, team emotions and memories of his hometown, Herradura.

Through testimonies from López’s mother, Leonor Núñez, his coach Raúl Trujillo, and the athlete himself, the film presents a narrative of willpower, legacy and humility, revealing how a “dream of a little boy” evolved into a nationally celebrated champion shaped by sacrifice, love for family and community.

Since its premiere, Mijain has been screened at key international venues, including the recently concluded BRICS+ International Film Festival in St. Petrograd, and in Paris and Rome.

The film’s touring schedule has seen it arrive in countries as diverse as Nepal and Sri Lanka, offering local audiences a glimpse into Cuban sporting culture that has traditionally been underrepresented in global media.

While the documentary has been celebrated for its in‑depth personal narratives and exploration of Cuban sports culture, it has not yet generated any publicly noted controversies or conflicting reports regarding its production or distribution.

No uncertainties have been reported about the film’s reception, tour outcomes, or future narrative developments.
