In brief

S‑Oil Corp. reported a record third‑quarter net income of 1.43 trillion won, up 2,171.3% year‑over‑year, driven by higher refining and lubricants margins. Operating profit surged 513.7% to 1.4 trillion won, while revenue rose 42.2% to 11.96 trillion won. The company forecast continued high refining margins into the fourth quarter and noted trial operations of its new Shaheen petrochemical complex.

S‑Oil Corp., South Korea’s third‑largest refinery by sales, announced on Monday that its third‑quarter net income reached 1.43 trillion won (US$1.1 billion), a staggering 2,171.3% increase from the same period last year. The spike was driven by higher refining and lubricants margins amid resilient oil prices, according to a regulatory filing the company filed with market regulators.

The company’s operating profit for the July‑September period vaulted to 1.4 trillion won, up 513.7% year‑on‑year. This level of operating profit exceeded market expectations by 6.2% from the average estimate compiled by Yonhap Infomax. Sales rose 42.2% to 11.96 trillion won from 8.42 trillion won a year earlier, reflecting the higher profitability of both refining and lubricants sectors.

"A combination of high oil prices, improved export refining margins and improved profitability in the lubricants business pushed up the quarterly results," the company said in the filing, citing both the strengthening of export refining margins and tighter lubricants supply due to production disruptions and logistical constraints.

From January to September, S‑Oil swung from a net loss of 48.13 billion won to a net profit of 2.67 trillion won. Operating profit also moved from an operating loss of 136.29 billion won to a profit of 3.6 trillion won, while sales climbed 26.7% to 32.25 trillion won. These figures underscore the company’s broad‑based turnaround during the first nine months of the year.

Looking ahead, S‑Oil expects refining margins to remain high in the fourth quarter, supported by low global inventories and strong seasonal demand for heating oil. It also notes that lubricant supply should remain tight due to ongoing production disruptions. The company announced that a 9.26 trillion‑won petrochemical complex under its Shaheen project is now in trial operation, with production of key petrochemical products such as ethylene, propylene, and butadiene anticipated for early 2027. Saudi Arabia’s state‑owned Aramco holds a 63.4% stake in S‑Oil, underlining the firm’s international backing.

Uncertainties that remain include whether the high refining margins will persist beyond the fourth quarter, the exact outcome of the Shaheen trial operations, and the final financial impact of the new petrochemical complex. The company has not yet released a consolidated estimate for net profit, and while operating profit beat analysts’ average forecasts, the precision of future earnings predictions remains unclear.
