Romanian authorities have uncovered a substantial interference plot in the country’s presidential elections involving a coordinated social media strategy on TikTok and a wave of cyber-attacks. This alarming disclosure follows the unexpected rise of Calin Georgescu, a far-right candidate with ties to Vladimir Putin, who recently advanced in the election process. According to Romania's domestic intelligence agency, evidence suggests a "state-sponsored actor" orchestrated this operation, aimed at boosting Georgescu’s profile, which was previously unknown to many Romanian voters.
In a move that has raised electoral integrity concerns, the intelligence report details a "highly organized" campaign disseminating a uniform message via various influencers while circumventing electoral advertising regulations on the platform. The documents indicate that a TikTok account funneled approximately $381,000 in advertising funds to users for promoting Georgescu’s candidacy, disregarding platform rules about political content.
The intelligence findings came to light from declassified reports released by outgoing President Klaus Iohannis just days before the election's crucial second round. These documents also pointed to the theft of data from electoral websites, allegedly by hackers linked to Russian cyber-crime activities. Reports noted around 85,000 attempted breaches aimed at electoral systems, showcasing tactics indicative of a national-level cybersecurity threat.
Georgescu, now under scrutiny, claims that these revelations are strategic attempts to undermine his candidacy and insists he had no influence over those facilitating his digital campaign. Meanwhile, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who finished third in the elections, has pledged support for reformist candidate Elena Lasconi, amidst calls for accountability and an investigation into the cyber attacks.
As further tensions rise in Romania, a pro-European Union protest has been organized, in a bid to emphasize public commitment to Romania's pro-European trajectory. Georgescu, however, cautions against unrest, highlighting historical parallels with Ukraine’s political upheavals.
The unfolding situation raises critical questions about electoral integrity and foreign interference, as the nation gears up for a decisive vote in the coming days.
