In brief

Lastborn Shazi, an organiser for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, was shot dead in his KwaZulu‑Natal home while on a Zoom campaign call. Police have launched a murder investigation and are probing the motive as crimes against political figures spike ahead of local elections. Senior police spokesmen and the national president have outlined security measures amid concerns over electoral violence.

Lastborn Shazi, an organiser of South Africa’s uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), was shot dead at his home in KwaZulu‑Natal late on Monday, just days before local government elections are set to take place on Wednesday. The incident occurred while Shazi was on a Zoom call to coordinate the party’s campaign, according to police reports.

Senior police spokesman Robert Netshiunda said Tuesday that a murder investigation had been opened following Shazi’s death.

"We have opened a murder investigation as we look into the matter," Netshiunda said.

The killing comes amid a wave of violence targeting political representatives, party members and supporters, with police officials reporting 20 such murders during the municipal election period last weekend. President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered the deployment of over 500 troops to KwaZulu‑Natal to support police operations and has identified more than 165 polling stations in the province as high‑risk.

Political Context

The MKP, led by former President Jacob Zuma after a split with the African National Congress (ANC) in 2023, is expected to emerge as the largest party in the eThekwini metropolitan area, the economic hub of KwaZulu‑Natal. Succeeding the ANC there would represent a significant political shift; the party’s rise had already eroded ANC support in the 2024 national election.

Security Measures

In response to rising tensions, the government has bolstered security around identified vulnerable sites. The deployment of more than 500 soldiers is intended to deter violence and maintain order at the over 165 high‑risk polling stations. Local governments will still be responsible for electing councillors who in turn will select mayors to manage municipal services such as water, sanitation and rubbish collection.

The rapid sequence of the organiser’s murder, the heightened security posture and the imminent municipal elections underscore the fragility of the electoral environment. The MKP campaign had outlined ambitious local service plans, making the event a high‑stakes moment for the opposition party’s aspirations.

While a formal investigation has begun, the motive for Shazi’s killing remains undetermined. Authorities have not yet released any leads on whether the murder was politically motivated or the result of personal or criminal factors. Both the police and the national leadership have acknowledged the need to investigate further, but no conclusive explanation has emerged to date.
