Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa's ambassador to France, has been found dead near the four-star Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris, according to French officials.

The 58-year-old diplomat was reported missing by his wife after she received a worrying message from him. He had booked a room on the 22nd floor of the hotel, with investigators noting that the security window had been forced open.

While the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, the Paris prosecutor's office has confirmed an investigation has been initiated, with a duty magistrate dispatched to the scene.

Mthethwa was a significant political figure, serving in various high-ranking roles, including as a member of the African National Congress. Having taken office as ambassador in December 2023, Mthethwa previously held positions as police minister and arts and culture minister. He was also closely associated with former President Jacob Zuma and was involved in inquiries regarding allegations of corruption during Zuma’s presidency.

South Africa’s Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola expressed deep sorrow over Mthethwa’s passing, calling him a distinguished servant of the nation and indicating that his loss would be felt within the international diplomatic community.
