Malawi police are investigating the disappearance of four police dogs from the presidential palace located in Lilongwe during the political upheaval following the recent elections. The political transition saw former President Lazarus Chakwera vacate the premises after losing to Peter Mutharika.

Godfrey Arthur Jalale, the State House's former deputy chief of staff under Chakwera, was arrested in connection to the dog theft, although he firmly denies the allegations against him.

Local authorities indicate that the dogs, valuable assets valued at approximately $2,300 (£1,700), went missing between September 19 and October 4, 2025. The police confirmed that they have intensified investigations following reports of additional thefts from two presidential residences, including state property.

Despite rumors of Chakwera's arrest, police have confirmed that no such action has been taken against him, but they have secured a search warrant for his residence based on allegations of harboring the stolen dogs.

Political tensions have escalated with the Malawi Congress Party accusing Mutharika's administration of harassing the former leader, while the investigation unfolds further. This incident has raised questions about the management of state resources during a critical time for the nation, facing severe economic challenges.

Chakwera, who received 33% of the electoral votes, has maintained a low profile since conceding defeat but recently made an appearance regarding a new appointment to mediate in Tanzania's post-election conflict.

Reports suggest that there has been a significant police presence around Chakwera’s residence as the political atmosphere evolves amidst these allegations of property looting from government facilities.
