In brief
The fallout from Romania's first round of presidential elections has led to an unexpected recount, as allegations surface regarding TikTok's preferential treatment of winner Calin Georgescu.
Romania's political landscape is in disarray following the first round of presidential elections, as the nation prepares for an unprecedented vote recount ordered by the Constitutional Court. This decision arises amid swirling accusations that the social media giant TikTok granted "preferential treatment" to surprise frontrunner Calin Georgescu, a candidate lacking formal party affiliation and whose campaign prominently utilized the platform. Despite the claims, TikTok has firmly rejected allegations of bias, asserting that all candidate accounts were treated evenly. The court's ruling comes after Georgescu garnered 23% of the votes, ahead of opposition candidate Elena Lasconi who received 19%. The third place was taken by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu from the ruling Social Democrats. The Central Election Bureau is tasked with determining the logistical aspects of the recount, an extraordinary procedure not witnessed in post-Communist Romania. In the political arena, Lasconi has voiced her concerns about electoral integrity, urging for a transparent recount process as tensions rise. "Extremism is fought by voting, not backstage games," she stated, challenging the Bureau to uphold equal treatment under the law. The Supreme Council of National Defence has also accused TikTok of failing to observe electoral regulations, with outgoing President Klaus Iohannis highlighting the platform's oversight in political candidate marking.Georgescu, who has seen his TikTok following surge from 30,000 to over 330,000 within weeks, claimed his campaign operated on a minimal budget, promoting the idea that a grassroots movement was behind his rise. As protests erupt against him in various cities, he invites his supporters to refrain from reacting to provocations. In light of the turbulent political atmosphere, Romania's Telecoms Regulator ANCOM has called for TikTok to be suspended pending an investigation into the electoral manipulation complaints. The National Audiovisual Council has also urged the European Commission to scrutinize TikTok's involvement in the ongoing election cycle. With parliamentary elections on the horizon and rising support for far-right parties, Romania faces a deeply divided public sentiment ranging from exuberance to despair.
