The US government will impose a substantial pickup in sanctions against Russia as the fighting in Ukraine continues, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Bessent's comments came just before NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte was due at the White House, where he hoped to discuss “how to deliver” Trump’s “vision of peace” in the conflict.
Earlier in the day, Rutte expressed his belief that Trump is the only one who can get this done regarding the war in Ukraine.
Tragically, at least seven people, including two children, were killed during intense Russian drone and missile strikes shortly after Trump's proposed meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest was shelved.
Bessent provided no further details on the incoming sanctions but indicated they would be announced either after the close this afternoon or first thing tomorrow morning. US lawmakers await a directive from the White House to vote on a bill enforcing steep sanctions against Russia and targeting countries purchasing oil from the Kremlin.
During the discussions at the White House, Rutte was expected to address a 12-point plan developed by European NATO allies and Kyiv. This plan aims to freeze the current front lines of conflict, facilitate the return of deported children, and facilitate prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia.
This plan also includes proposals for a war recovery fund for Ukraine and strategies for increased military aid alongside economic pressure on Moscow.
In recent commentary, Trump has emphasized his desire for a practical resolution to the conflict, suggesting that fighting should cease at the existing battle lines.
The Kremlin, however, persists in its demands for Ukrainian troops to vacate the Donbas region, indicating that the tensions are far from resolution.
