Oslo Mayor Cancels Wedding Amid King’s Funeral
Oslo's Mayor Anne Lindboe has called off her wedding ceremony because of the death of King Harald V of Norway.
The wedding with fiancé Pål Sandvid was originally scheduled for Friday, but the mayor announced a postponement after King Harald V died earlier that day, according to her political adviser.
In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Lindboe wrote: "It's hard to imagine an Oslo and a Norway without you. You didn’t need a crown to be king," echoing national sentiment.
Harald, who reigned for 35 years, passed away at the national hospital in Oslo while battling a rare blood condition. His son, King Haakon VIII, ascended the throne the same evening.
No new wedding date has been set; the mayor’s adviser confirmed that the event will be postponed until further notice. The couple announced their engagement in June and have been together for five years.
The death of the revered monarch has triggered national mourning: a memorial outside Oslo’s Royal Palace has seen crowds laying flowers, and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre spoke of "united grief and gratitude."
International leaders also paid tribute; King Charles III expressed mourning for his "dear cousin," highlighting the shared royal lineage.
