Melbourne mourns the loss of a promising young cricketer as seventeen-year-old Ben Austin passed away after a tragic accident during a practice session. On Tuesday in Ferntree Gully, Ben was struck on the neck by a cricket ball launched by a handheld device.

Despite wearing a helmet, he did not have neck protection, which led to the fatal incident. Emergency responders were called to the scene shortly after the accident, and he was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, after being placed on life support, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Ben's father, Jace Austin, shared the family’s anguish, expressing, We are utterly devastated by the death of our beautiful Ben. He highlighted Ben's love for cricket, which had been a source of joy through countless summers spent playing with friends.

The cricket community in Victoria is reflective and saddened by the loss. Cricket Victoria’s CEO, Nick Cummins, noted that it’s an extremely challenging time for everyone involved, comparing the incident to a similar tragedy involving Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes in 2014.

The Ferntree Gully Cricket Club has paid tribute to Ben, inviting friends and supporters to honor his memory. The impact of losing such a vibrant young man is being felt deeply within the local sporting community, with tributes pouring in about his character and contributions both on and off the field.

In a loving tribute, Ben’s football club, the Waverley Park Hawks, described him as kind and respectful, emphasizing the impact he made in all his communities. He was developing into a fine young adult, and his absence will be felt for many years to come.
