A tragic fire that erupted in a nursing home in northeastern Bosnia-Herzegovina has claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals and left 20 others injured, according to local police.
The incident occurred late on the evening of November 5, 2025, at a retirement facility in the town of Tuzla, with the blaze starting on the seventh floor shortly after 20:45 local time (19:45 GMT).
Among the injured were firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and residents of the nursing home, all requiring medical attention following the chaotic event.
While the cause of the fire remains undetermined, Prime Minister Nermin Nikšić described the incident as a disaster of enormous proportions. He shared the sympathies of the government to the families affected by this tragedy.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire resulted in the deaths of 10 nursing home residents, as confirmed by a police spokesperson. A thorough investigation into the blaze will be initiated once authorities deem it safe to proceed.

A resident, Ruza Kajic, recounted her experience, stating she was awakened by strange sounds. She looked out to see burning debris falling from above before rushing into the hallway to escape.
Images from the scene captured the flames roaring from the upper floors of the nursing home, while reports from a university clinical center indicated that several patients were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning, with three individuals in intensive care.
