In the three weeks since the Louvre museum heist, as investigators sought to uncover the identities behind the theft of the French crown jewels, another mystery remained: the identity of the 'fedora man'. This dapper youth, photographed outside the museum during the chaos, caught the attention of social media, leading to wild speculation regarding his presence.
The mystery deepened when the thieves' negligence with DNA allowed police to identify them swiftly, revealing that the Louvre's security measures were insufficient. Yet, the identity of the well-dressed teenager remained elusive until now.
The mystery man turned out to be Pedro Elias Garzon Delvaux, a local 15-year-old from Rambouillet, just southwest of Paris. Pedro, a dedicated fan of literary detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, dressed in a vintage style that evokes a sense of classic elegance.
Initially planning to visit the Louvre with his family, Pedro was caught off-guard upon arrival, discovering the museum shut down due to the heist. While speaking to officers at the scene, a photographer captured a candid image that would go viral within days.
Four days later, friends alerted him to the photo’s popularity, which shocked him, particularly when it appeared in major outlets like The New York Times. “I was astonished that just with one photo you can become viral in a few days,” Pedro admitted, reflecting on his sudden fame.
Wearing a waistcoat and fedora not only made him stand out but also reflected his personal taste. “I like to be chic,” he stated. After remaining silent regarding the speculation surrounding his identity, Pedro explained, “I didn't want to say immediately it was me. With this photo there is a mystery, so you have to make it last.”
