Teenager Killed in New York Horse‑Carriage Accident

Horse carriage accident in Central Park

An 18‑year‑old Indian tourist died after falling from a horse‑drawn carriage in Central Park, New York City, police confirmed.

The rider was traveling with three companions when the carriage driver stepped away to take a photograph of the group. The horse then bolted, clipped another carriage, and toppled over, sending the teenager into a fatal fall. The victim was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead; the other passengers were unharmed.

A union spokesperson criticized the driver’s decision: "This is unacceptable. A driver is not supposed to leave the carriage to take photos – ever. We support a full investigation," Alexander Kemp, a vice president of the Transport Workers Union Local 100, said.

The accident comes just a week after a carriage horse named Deniz died in Central Park after ingesting a toxic plant, adding to the debate over the safety of the historic attraction.

New‑York mayor Zohran Mamdani and several city council members have called for the removal of carriages from the park, citing animal welfare and public safety concerns. "These incidents are not isolated. We must pass Ryder’s Law, end this outdated industry, and ensure a just transition for workers," council member Shahana Hanif wrote on X.

Under Ryder’s Law, the city would cease issuing new carriage licenses and phase out existing rides over two years. The proposal has received strong support from animal‑rights groups yet faces opposition from some industry stakeholders.
