A teenage assailant armed with a sword unleashed violence on the Brinell School in Fagersta early Friday, leaving two students with severe injuries.
Police responded within minutes, arrested the suspect and later shot him in the leg during a confrontation. A third victim was wounded, though the extent remains unconfirmed.
Following the incident, eight nearby schools were temporarily locked down under emergency protocols. The lockdown ended swiftly once authorities declared the threat neutralized.
The vastmanland region entered a state of high alert. Officials assured the public that no additional danger currently exists.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson labelled the event a serious incident, stressing that investigations continue to uncover motives.
Brinell School welcomed students back after the summer break, anticipating the new term—either Monday or Wednesday—depending on the academic calendar.
The attack adds to a disturbing trend of violence across Swedish schools. In 2025 a mass shooting at an adult education centre, and earlier attacks—including a 2022 school shooting in Malmo and a 2015 sword stabbing in Trollhattan—have raised national concerns.
