MONTGOMERY, Ala. (FDN) — After a devastating shooting incident resulted in two fatalities and twelve injuries in downtown Montgomery, Governor Kay Ivey announced on Monday that the state will enhance public safety measures throughout the city.
The shooting occurred late Saturday night in a bustling downtown area frequented by locals and tourists, just a short distance from the Alabama Capitol and prominent historical sites.
Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys reported that at least one of the victims appeared to have been specifically targeted, leading to chaos as bystanders began firing their weapons in response.
“As you can imagine, that situation escalated very quickly,” Chief Graboys commented, stating that several victims were under the age of 20.
In response to the violence, Governor Ivey stated her intention to expand the patrol areas for Capitol troopers and seek legislative support for enhanced law enforcement funding. She emphasized that all available state resources are being considered in the wake of this tragedy, highlighting Montgomery's rich cultural significance and the need for enhanced safety.
Despite the state’s efforts, Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed remarked that true safety demands confronting the state’s permissive gun laws. He pointedly noted that Alabama has eliminated the requirement for a permit to carry a concealed weapon, which has restricted police from maintaining effective control.
Mayor Reed indicated that the recent shooting transpired despite the presence of law enforcement nearby, emphasizing the urgent need to address the root causes of gun violence in the community.
As discussions continue within the state government regarding future safety protocols, Governor Ivey and city officials remain steadfast in their commitment to fostering a safer environment in Montgomery.
