Nigeria in Mourning: 32 Killed in Military Plane Crash

In a tragic incident on Monday, a military ATR‑42 aircraft crashed near a swampy area in Ondo State, killing 25 passengers and seven crew members. The aircraft was reportedly on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when it lost control and impacted near a naval base.

Local residents described the crash site as a swamp where clothes and shoes were scattered and smoke drifted above the wreckage. Former air force pilot accounts, as relayed by witnesses, echoed the same picture of sudden loss.

President Bola Tinubu announced a three‑day period of national mourning, ordering flags at half‑masts and a full investigation into the cause. He lamented the “painful moment for our Armed Forces and for the entire nation,” stressing that their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo reported that the military had been notified of the aircraft’s disappearance earlier that morning at 09:13 local time. Search and rescue operations were immediately launched, but the wreckage was confirmed to have collapsed near the naval base in Igbokoda.

Officials plan to disclose the identities of those killed once families are notified, noting that the aircraft could accommodate between 30 and 50 people. The accident marks one of the deadliest incidents involving Nigerian military aviation in recent years.

Previous tragedies have shaken the country: in May 2021, Army Chief Lt‑Gen Ibrahim Attahiru and ten officers perished in a crash over Kaduna, and in February of the same year, another military plane crashed short of a runway in Abuja, claiming seven lives.

The Nigerian Air Force remains a pivotal element in counter‑insurgency and national security. The current incident underscores the need for stringent safety protocols to protect personnel and the nation at large.
