NSW Premier Defends Police Action Amid Bondi Beach Attack Criticism
The New South Wales premier has rejected criticism of the police response to the attack on a Jewish festival at Bondi Beach, stating officers acted with bravery and integrity during a harrowing incident.
Witness reports have indicated that police were allegedly slow to disarm the two gunmen who tragically killed 15 individuals and injured many others on Sunday.
Chris Minns noted that two officers are presently in critical condition, emphasizing that they were not shot in the back as they were running away. They were shot in the front. The gunmen launched an attack lasting approximately ten minutes before police intervened, resulting in the death of one attacker and critical injury of the other.
Criticism has also surfaced regarding the adequacy of security before the shooting occurred. They shoot, shoot, change magazine and just shoot, remarked witness Shmulik Scuri, suggesting that officers appeared to freeze in response to the incident.
In addressing these criticisms, Minns dismissed the rush to conclusions regarding the police operation, labeling it disrespectful. He praised the officers for their bravery in engaging the armed suspects, who possessed long-range rifles, while officers were armed only with handguns.
If any implication exists that the NSW Police failed in their duty, Minns asserted it should be rejected, as it contradicts the actual facts.
Questions regarding the number of officers deployed for event security were deferred by NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, who indicated that police regularly patrol areas based on the threat levels at any given time.
Australia's security agency previously identified Naveed Akram, one of the alleged gunmen, but found no direct threats that warranted increased policing measures.
The NSW Police have initiated Operation Shelter following the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel to combat antisemitic hate crimes, with resources directed towards high-risk locations, including Bondi Beach, notable for its substantial Jewish community.
Dr. Vincent Hurley, a former police officer, discussed the complexities that officers faced in such chaotic circumstances, emphasizing that comprehensive training may not exist to prepare for every scenario. He cited the challenges of navigating traffic and responding amidst the confusion of fleeing crowds.
Overall, while the tragedy at Bondi Beach has prompted numerous questions, officials have stressed the importance of assessing the situation without hasty judgments, as the aftermath of violence tends to complicate immediate responses.
