PORTLAND, Maine (Flux Daily) — Maine Family Planning has announced the closure of its primary care services beginning this Friday, a direct consequence of cuts to abortion providers under the Trump administration’s policies.
The network operates 18 clinics throughout the state, providing crucial health services such as cancer screenings, STD testing, and contraceptive access, in addition to abortion services, which represent a small fraction of their overall operations. The recent administrative decisions to block Medicaid funding for abortion providers have negatively impacted their revenues and patient reach.
George Hill, the president of Maine Family Planning, stated, 'It's heartbreaking to inform our patients that we can no longer provide care for them. Many may struggle to find new healthcare providers, leading them to possibly skip essential medical attention.'
The organization typically serves around 8,000 patients and generates approximately $1.9 million annually through Medicaid reimbursements. Despite ongoing litigation challenging the Medicaid cuts, the network faced a setback in August when a federal judge ruled against restoring funding.
Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, which is representing Maine Family Planning in court, emphasized that this funding loss is part of a broader strategy to undermine reproductive health clinics nationwide, including those in pro-abortion states like Maine.
As the network faces closure, the implications for low-income patients in rural areas of Maine remain a significant concern.
