New York Attorney General Letitia James Indicted
New York Attorney General Letitia James has been criminally indicted on federal charges by a grand jury.
James, recognized for spearheading a civil fraud investigation against Trump in 2023, is facing charges of bank fraud in the Eastern District of Virginia. Court documents indicate that prosecutors allege she made false representations to a financial institution regarding a mortgage loan for a property in Norfolk, Virginia.
In her defense, James accused Trump of desperate weaponization of our justice system, asserting that he was forcing federal agencies to act against her due to her professional responsibilities as Attorney General.
James's statement highlighted her view that the charges are baseless, claiming they are driven by Trump's desire for political retribution.
U.S. prosecutor Lindsey Halligan, overseeing the case, stressed that the charges reflect severe breaches of public trust and declared that no one is above the law. She confirmed that if convicted, James could face severe penalties, including up to 30 years in prison per count.
James's lawyer expressed deep concern over what they perceive as the motivations behind the case, suggesting it stems from President Trump's vendetta against her for doing her job.
Her first court appearance is slated for October 24 in Norfolk, amplifying tensions in a fractious political landscape where accusations of justice system manipulation are echoing across party lines.
