Indonesia Pulls Plug on Luxury Prison
Indonesia has ordered the demolition of luxury apartment blocks discovered inside the Cibinong Correctional Facility in the Bogor province, a decision that follows a costly public outcry over the perceived preferential treatment of wealthy inmates.
During a surprise inspection on 23 September, investigators unveiled amenities that were far above standard prison accommodations: air‑conditioned rooms, large‑screen televisions, refrigerators, sofas, a gym, a golf simulator under construction, and even luxury vehicles parked on the premises.
While prison officials asserted that the apartments were intended for staff, the discovery has reignited longstanding allegations that Indonesia’s prison system allows affluent or well‑connected inmates to purchase improved living conditions through bribery.
The government has pledged to review all prison management protocols and to close any facilities that facilitate corruption, following the demolition of the luxury units and the initiation of a probe into how the apartments came to be built.
The incident has prompted calls from civil society groups for comprehensive prison reform, with activists stressing that the current infrastructure grants a dangerous advantage to the privileged.
