FIFA Faces Turmoil: Infantino, Allegations, & a Fight for Control Across Timelines

FIFA has publicly condemned what it calls a "concerted and ongoing effort" to undermine the organisation and its president, Gianni Infantino. The statement comes after a Daily Telegraph report claiming that Infantino’s alleged lover received a severance payment from UEFA when he was a general secretary.
Infantino has publicly denied the allegations, labelling them "categorically untrue," while FIFA labelled the accusations "unsubstantiated assertions". The controversy has dovetailed with the stalled FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal—an initiative that would have created a commercial arm and sold a 21% stake to a private investor group.
UEFA has already lost confidence in Infantino, and Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness has called on the Swiss‑Italian to resign. The European governing body quietly announced that its threat of a boycott is still in place, while no assurances have been offered that the FFE plan could be revived.
FIFA’s defence reiterated that Infantino was democratically elected by member associations and that any attempt to remove him without a global vote is illegitimate. The directive also warned that scrutiny must not transform into a platform for misinformation or distractions.
While the controversy and pressure largely come from European bodies, global stakeholders are sounding the alarm. The Mexican Football Federation has publicly supported Infantino, echoing Conmebol’s refusal to push for his removal without a vote of all 211 FIFA member countries. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) stands behind Infantino with unanimous backing from 54 nations.
