Debsirin School Shooting: A Student's Rending Testimony

On Friday morning, students at Debsirin School in Nonthaburi flurried outside as a 14‑year‑old pupil fired a handgun inside the building. The shooter's life‑changing act claimed five teachers’ lives and left more than thirty wounded, including fellow students.

"I was standing in front of the teacher when she was shot," a seventh‑grader said in a shaky voice to the BBC. “She was talking to me when the gunman appeared.” The girl, whose name is withheld by the BBC, described how the attacker moved from room to room and how she and other classmates climbed over the school fence to escape.

Police initially described the tragedy as “one of the deadliest mass shootings in Thailand’s recent history.”

The 14‑year‑old allegedly used a 9mm handgun that forensic officers linked to his grandfather. Several shots hit “vital spots” on victims, indicating a high level of accuracy. Authorities have not yet released a motive, and an investigation is ongoing.

Teachers, students and parents are grappling with the loss. The victim’s mother recalled the moment her daughter said she feared she would never see her again. One grieving teacher, who declined to give his name, said, “She was my age. We went to this school together as students, then both became teachers here.”

The shooter committed suicide, reportedly after the final round, leaving a community of students and teachers to confront the ashes of violence and seek measures that might prevent a repeat.
