British Couple Survives Warning Shots from Russian Frigate in English Channel

Retired Mr and Mrs Kelvey were sailing 23 miles off the Isle of Wight when the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich closed in on their yacht, the Bright Future, within 500 yards. The warship fired a series of five horn blasts, followed by 4‑5 small‑arms shots into the water above the vessel.

Mrs Kelvey said the crew on board shook wet canvas over the yacht’s canvas hood while Mr Kelvey navigated 90 degrees to port to avoid a perceived collision. The couple assured Sainsbury’s that they were not on a collision course and that the shots were not aimed at them but were warning fire.

Sir Keir Starmer labelled the watch fire “reckless” during a BBC interview, citing the incident as “deeply concerning”. The Defence Ministry stressed that the warship was drifting, and the fire was a precaution to avert a potential collision, an assessment unknown to the Kelveys who reported no radio contact or flares.

The incident occurred 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight in international waters. While the Admiralty said the fire was an isolated event, there were no direct links to the preceding seizure of a Russian‑flagged tanker that day.

It follows a wave of Russian‑flagged vessels—referred to as shadow fleet ships—traversing the Channel, and a Royal Navy patrol vessel, HMS Tyne, later reached the yacht to confirm safety of the crew.

Mr Wallace, former defence secretary, remarked the gesture appeared aggressive and would have been clear that the ship was not a collision threat. He also criticised the UK’s defence spending in the face of Russian provocations.

Mrs Kelvey described the event as “completely unnecessary” and “hazardous to navigation”, echoing concerns that this incident signals a narrowing berth for UK maritime sovereignty.

For further context, the Admiral Grigorovich has escorted several Russian‑flagged vessels across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Baltic, and the Royal Navy has monitored the vessel for several days.
