Apple sues OpenAI over alleged trade‑secret theft

Apple has formally accused its rival, OpenAI, of stealing confidential information by way of former employees in a federal complaint filed on 10 July 2026. The lawsuit also names two ex‑Apple staff members and the design startup io Products, which was acquired by OpenAI last year.

According to Apple, the defendants engaged in a “pattern of theft”, using privileged data about product development, manufacturing techniques and undisclosed projects to fuel OpenAI’s emerging hardware initiatives. The company alleges that ex‑Apple engineers emailed themselves proprietary Apple documents and that recruiters allegedly asked prospective hires to bring actual Apple parts for interviews.

Apple’s lawyer stated that the case stemmed from significant evidence presented earlier in February, which the company tried to discuss with OpenAI without response. The suit therefore seeks an immediate injunction to prevent the alleged misuse of confidential information, along with unspecified monetary damages.

The litigation marks a turning point in the relationship between the two tech giants, with OpenAI previously integrating ChatGPT into Apple devices and now moving many AI features to Google’s Gemini framework. The dispute also highlights how talent mobility can potentially blur the lines of competitive secrecy in the AI industry.

If the court sides with Apple, the settlement could bar OpenAI from operating its hardware ventures that depend on the stolen data, underscoring the serious legal ramifications of alleged corporate espionage.
