In brief

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin announced the deployment of a THAAD missile defense system to Israel, designed to enhance protection against Iranian attacks, amid intensifying military operations in the region.

An advanced missile defense system, known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), has been deployed to Israel by the United States to bolster the nation's defenses against Iranian aggression, according to Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin. This strategic move follows a significant missile offensive by Iran on October 1, which saw approximately 180 ballistic missiles launched towards Israel, many of which were intercepted by Israel's air defense systems in collaboration with U.S. support.Mr. Austin confirmed the system's operation capability during his visit, stating that U.S. troops, specifically about 100 personnel, are present in Israel to assist in the system's operation. This deployment marks a milestone as it is the first time U.S. military personnel have been stationed in Israel in this capacity since the attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023. The THAAD system, which provides mobile, next-generation capabilities, aims to protect critical infrastructures, military forces, and cities from short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. In response to Israel's military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, which include strikes against Iran-backed militia groups, the U.S. has previously increased its military presence in the region. Following the outbreak of the war, warships were dispatched to the Persian Gulf, along with additional missile defense systems. With more than 40,000 U.S. troops currently in the Middle East and further reinforcements planned, Pentagon officials emphasize the importance of these military enhancements in ensuring regional security. The THAAD system not only intercepts ballistic missiles but has the capability to contain the debris from downed threats, thereby preventing potential casualties and damage on the ground. As tensions remain high in the Middle East, this significant military support highlights the ongoing commitment of the U.S. to Israel and its allies in the face of external threats.
