Ukraine Strikes Back: Russia Agents Killed Following Intelligence Officer's Assassination
Following the assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych, Ukraine claims to have eliminated two Russian FSB agents involved in the shooting.
Ukraine has reported the death of two Russian agents linked to the assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych, a senior intelligence officer, who was shot multiple times in a Kyiv car park on July 10. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) announced during a video statement by their chief, Vasyl Malyuk, that the agents were found and killed after resisting arrest on Sunday. The incident received widespread attention, particularly as it occurred in broad daylight, with CCTV footage showcasing the moments leading up to the shooting.
According to the SBU, the agents, who were identified as "citizens of a foreign country," had been monitoring Colonel Voronych's activities before carrying out the attack. They had received intelligence indicating his location before the assassination. Following Voronych's death, the agents attempted to conceal themselves but were tracked down through a collaborative investigation with national police.
While the Kremlin has made no formal comments regarding the operation, allegations of abduction and assassination have escalated amid heightened violence. The SBU has gained notoriety for conducting sabotage operations and retaliatory strikes inside Russia during the ongoing conflict, which has entered its third year.
This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported record levels of Russian aerial attacks on Ukrainian territory earlier this week. June alone marked the highest civilian casualties in three years according to UN estimates, with fighting continuing along various fronts. As diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire appear to be crumbling, military initiatives remain unrelenting, and new shipments of military supplies from the United States bolster Ukraine's defenses against Russia's intensified assaults, including drone warfare that has adversely affected civilian morale.
