Ukraine Strikes Back: Two Russian Agents Killed Following High-Profile Assassination
In retaliation for the assassination of Ukrainian intelligence officer Ivan Voronych, Ukraine's SBU has eliminated two alleged Russian agents involved in the attack.
Ukraine has confirmed the liquidation of two Russian agents in the wake of the assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych, a senior member of the Ukrainian intelligence service, who was shot multiple times in a daylight attack on July 10 in Kyiv. Vasyl Malyuk, head of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), stated that the agents, linked to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), were tracked down and killed after resisting arrest during a police operation on Sunday.
The attack on Colonel Voronych occurred in a southern Kyiv car park, where he was approached by an unidentified assailant who subsequently fled. The SBU reported that the assailants were monitoring Voronych’s movements and possessed a firearm equipped with a silencer. After the shooting, they attempted to evade capture, but were located and eliminated through a coordinated investigation involving the national police.
In addition to focusing on internal security, the SBU has engaged in sabotage operations targeting Russian personnel since the onset of the ongoing conflict in 2022. Sources indicate that the SBU was also behind the assassination of high-ranking Russian General Igor Kirillov in December 2024. Similarly, Ukraine's security services have been linked to a car bombing that killed General Yaroslav Moskalik in Moscow in April, although Kyiv has not officially acknowledged its involvement.
This incident unfolds amidst an alarming increase in Russian military aggression, which has witnessed record levels of aerial strikes against Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the country is experiencing the most extensive Russian air assault to date, with civilian casualties reaching their highest monthly toll in three years, as reported by the UN. Current military operations have seen Russia making gradual advances in eastern Ukraine and reclaiming territories previously held by Ukrainian forces. Negotiations for a potential ceasefire have stalled, further complicating the ongoing multi-year conflict.
