Tragedy Strikes French Riviera: Three Lives Lost Amid Catastrophic Floods
Severe storms wreak havoc on southern France, leaving destruction and fatalities in their wake.
At least three individuals have tragically lost their lives due to severe floods triggered by intense rainfall and storms in southern France. Reports confirmed that an elderly couple was located deceased in the seaside town of Le Lavandou, while another victim died after becoming trapped in their vehicle in Vidauban. The relentless rains, which commenced on Monday, have led to significant damage throughout the region, submerging streets and causing extensive disruptions to power and water services.
Local authorities indicated that multiple regional trains were halted after damages occurred on railway tracks overnight. The elderly couple perished after attempting to evacuate their residence when they were unexpectedly overpowered by a rapid surge in water levels, as noted by the Toulon public prosecutor. An investigation into their deaths has been initiated.
Officials from Le Lavandou expressed their astonishment at the disaster's magnitude. The town’s Cavalière district experienced a staggering rainfall total of 256mm within just one hour, causing substantial flooding in the town center. Mayor Gil Bernardi characterized the event as a "frightening, incomprehensible phenomenon," pointing to torn-up roads and collapsed bridges as evidence of the storm's ferocity.
As of Tuesday, Le Lavandou continued to experience electricity and water outages, and access to the area was hindered due to flooding on major roads. In Vidauban, tragic tales emerged as one person died when their car ventured onto a flooded road and fell into a ditch. A passer-by attempted to assist the trapped occupants, managing to save only the driver, as per statements from Vidauban’s mayor, Claude Pianetti.
Emergency services received over 500 calls across the Var region within the past 24 hours, prompting hundreds of rescue personnel to mobilize from nearby locations, including Cannes. While further emergency weather alerts were issued for thunderstorms and flooding, these warnings were subsequently downgraded to minimal risk levels. Nevertheless, more than 600 households have been reported to be lacking electricity as of earlier updates. Severe hail and rainfall had impacted regions in southwestern France, leading to the cancellation of several trains on the Bordeaux-Toulouse railway line.
