**Indonesia Raises Alert Level as Lewotobi Laki-Laki Erupts**
**Tourist safety and local evacuations follow powerful volcanic eruption on Flores Island.**
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, one of Indonesia's most volatile volcanoes, erupted dramatically on Tuesday, releasing an ash cloud that soared more than 11 kilometers into the atmosphere. This eruption prompted authorities to issue the highest alert level as the volcano, located on the tourist-frequented island of Flores, demonstrated significant geological activity. The eruption occurred at 17:35 local time (10:35 BST) and resulted in a 7-kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano's crater, standing at 1,584 meters (about one mile) high. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The head of the volcanology agency, Muhammad Wafid, cautioned that activities near the volcano should be suspended due to the threat of further eruptions and potential lahar floods—volcanic mudflows—that can occur with heavy rainfall. Residents in the vicinity have been advised to wear protective masks to guard against volcanic ash, which has already begun to impact nearby villages. At least one village has been evacuated as ash fall has been reported in several areas beyond the designated exclusion zone, with local authorities emphasizing the need for safe relocation.
This isn't the first time Lewotobi Laki-Laki has caused concern; its last significant eruption occurred in May, which also required officials to raise public safety measures. Interestingly, the volcano, known as "man," is paired with the quieter, taller Perempuan, meaning "woman" in Indonesian, creating a striking geographical association that resonates culturally with the locals. As seismic activity continues, the local government remains on alert, closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of residents and tourists alike.
