In a historic election held on Sunday, Yamandú Orsi, a progressive former history teacher, has emerged victorious as the new president of Uruguay. Orsi, representing the Broad Front coalition, defeated Álvaro Delgado, the candidate from the outgoing conservative administration, by a margin exceeding three percentage points. Delgado graciously conceded and extended his congratulations to Orsi, who now prepares to lead the nation after a period of conservative governance that lasted five years.
This election marks the reinstatement of the Broad Front, which previously governed Uruguay for 15 years, from 2005 until 2020. The former President Luis Lacalle Pou, who could not run for reelection due to constitutional term limits, oversaw this recent conservative period.
Orsi, 57, known for his connection to former president José Mujica, rose to prominence from humble beginnings. Growing up without electricity in rural Uruguay, he later became the mayor of Canelones, where he oversaw Google’s announcement of a substantial data center investment in the region. In his campaign, Orsi adopted a pro-business stance, indicating that he would refrain from tax increases that may deter investors.
In his acceptance speech, Orsi emphasized the importance of unity among the 3.4 million citizens of Uruguay, pledging to serve as a president for all. He reiterated a commitment to national dialogue and inclusivity, expressing his aspiration to heal societal divides and ensure no demographic is marginalized economically, socially, or politically.
Outgoing President Lacalle Pou has vowed to facilitate an orderly transition of power as Orsi prepares to be sworn in on March 1 of next year. While Orsi's Broad Front coalition gained a commanding presence in the Senate, it faced challenges securing a majority in the Chamber of Representatives. In contrast to the political polarization evident in other regions of the Americas, the Uruguayan election featured a more moderate conflict.
