Bolsonaro's Health Declines Amid Legal Troubles
Former Brazilian president faces new challenges as health deteriorates in intensive care.
The health condition of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil's former president, has sharply declined after undergoing intestinal surgery earlier in the month, according to medical personnel attending to him. The 70-year-old leader remains in intensive care as he prepares for additional tests and evaluations.
On Wednesday, Bolsonaro was visited by a court official who delivered a legal summons related to coup charges imposed against him. He has been given a tight five-day deadline to submit his initial defense in response to the allegations that he instigated a right-wing coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election to President Lula da Silva. Upon receiving the summons, Bolsonaro reacted with visible anger, questioning, "I have five days to present my defense?"
The allegations stem from the aftermath of his supporters storming government buildings during the coup attempt. Investigators have indicated that Bolsonaro engaged in discussions with military figures regarding the potential for overturning the election results to retain his power.
Bolsonaro's health issues are compounded by a severe stabbing incident in 2018, which resulted in substantial blood loss and emergency surgery. Although he has consistently denied the coup allegations, he claims to be the target of a politically motivated witch-hunt orchestrated by his adversaries.
Despite his ongoing health struggles, Bolsonaro recently conducted a live YouTube session from his hospital bed with three of his sons, defying medical advice against having visitors. This action has led the Brazilian Supreme Court to assert that he is fit to receive legal notifications.
Previously aiming to make a comeback in the 2026 presidential race, Bolsonaro now risks facing a prison term of up to 40 years if convicted on the current charges.
As the situation unfolds, questions linger regarding both his recovery and his potential political future.
