A major military operation in Chhattisgarh results in high casualties among Naxalite insurgents as the state intensifies its campaign against left-wing extremism.
Dozens of Maoist guerrillas, associated with the Naxalite movement, met their end in a fierce confrontation with government forces in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Sunday. This operation, hailed as one of the most devastating against the insurgents in years, resulted in the deaths of 31 rebels along with two police personnel, according to Jitendra Kumar Yadav, the local police chief.
The government seized a number of rapid-fire weapons, including AK-47s, from the battlefield, a sign of the firepower that the Naxalites have often wielded in their guerrilla warfare. Home Minister Amit Shah declared the government's commitment to extinguishing Naxalism from Indian soil, pledging that no citizen would suffer further at the hands of the rebels.
This Maoist insurgency traces back to the 1960s in eastern India, evolving into a widespread conflict affecting central and southern regions. Its peak violence occurred in 2010, marked by the deaths of over 600 civilians and 250 security forces. However, the tide has shifted in recent years; civilian casualties have plummeted, and government initiatives have increasingly confined insurgent activities.
The Home Ministry reported last year that deaths related to the leftist extremism had reduced by 86 percent from their peak in 2010, with affected districts dropping from 126 to 38. Analysts suggest that the Maoists are encountering severe recruitment issues and face considerable setbacks due to targeted anti-insurgency operations and internal strife.
Niranjan Sahoo, an expert on left-wing extremism at the Observer Research Foundation, indicated that the insurgents are now at a precarious juncture, primarily encamped in specific districts, notably around the Abujhmad forest area, where they have suffered significant territorial losses.
