The Metropolitan Police have confirmed the arrest of three individuals in Essex on suspicion of spying for Russia. A 41-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were detained at one location in Grays, while a 46-year-old man was arrested at a different site in the same region.
All three are suspected of assisting a foreign intelligence service under section 3 of the National Security Act (NSA) 2023 and have been taken into custody for questioning at a police station in London. Police sources report that the nationalities involved in the accusations are linked to Russia.
Authorities conducted searches at the two arrest locations in Essex. Following their questioning, all three suspects have been released on police bail with conditions, and investigations are still in progress.
Cdr Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command, has expressed concerns over the rising number of UK residents being recruited by foreign intelligence services. He urged anyone approached for involvement in espionage to reconsider their actions, stating, This kind of activity will be investigated, and serious consequences await those who interfere with our national security through foreign affiliations.
This breaking news story is being updated, and more details will be released as they become available.
