Prominent Indian Politician Sentenced to Life for Rape Charge
A former MP from Karnataka faces justice after a high-profile conviction for sexual assault.
A court in Karnataka has sentenced prominent politician Prajwal Revanna to life in prison following his conviction for the rape of a former domestic employee. The sentencing came after a trial that unveiled a disturbing case of sexual assault against one of the state's influential families. Revanna, a 34-year-old ex-MP and grandson of former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, faced allegations stemming from the circulation of explicit videos in 2023, igniting national outrage over the issue of sexual violence in India.
During the trial, which concluded with his conviction on Friday, Revanna presented an emotional plea for leniency but was met with a firm sentencing the following day. Despite his denial of the charges, the evidence and testimonies against him were compelling. His legal team announced plans to appeal the life sentence.
The politician's departure from India in April 2024, using a diplomatic passport amidst the scandal, adds another layer of complexity to the case. While claiming the videos were manipulated, Revanna returned to India from Germany only to be arrested shortly after arrival. Currently, he faces two additional rape charges and another for sexual harassment, all of which he continues to contest vehemently.
This landmark sentencing marks a significant step in the fight against impunity for sexual offenses in India, especially involving influential individuals within the political sphere.
