**Mother of Missing US Journalist Returns to Syria Amid Renewed Search Efforts**

Debra Tice seeks answers and reunification with her son, missing since 2012, following political upheaval in Syria.

Debra Tice's poignant journey back to Syria offers a glimpse into her tireless quest for her son, Austin, amid the shifting political landscape.

In an emotional return to Syria, Debra Tice is reigniting the search for her son, Austin Tice, a freelance journalist abducted while covering the Syrian civil war in 2012. It marks her first visit in a decade, coinciding with the recent fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime after a swift offensive by rebel forces. Debra expressed her uncertainty regarding her son's fate, stating, “We had information, but the whole world changed…I have no idea where he is now," during an interview in Damascus.

Austin Tice was last seen in a chilling video shortly after his capture, which showed him blindfolded and in distress. Despite speculation suggesting he was in the custody of the Assad government, no definitive claims of responsibility have surfaced over the years. Investigative reports indicate that he may have briefly escaped captivity before being recaptured by Assad’s forces.

Recent political developments have offered a glimmer of hope. Following the Assad regime's downfall, President Joe Biden suggested he believed Tice was still alive, yet his exact whereabouts remain elusive. Following the rebel victories, thousands of prisoners have been released, prompting calls from families for transparency regarding those still unaccounted for.

Debra Tice's visit has led her to meet with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the new leader of Syria, who has committed to prosecuting those responsible for serious crimes during the Assad administration. Wearing her "Free Austin Tice" badge, Debra emphasized her optimism about her son's eventual return: “I've never had a moment of doubt… I always knew that [Tice] is going to walk free."

This trip also carries a personal significance for Debra, as she wishes to connect with families who share her plight. Reflecting on the current environment, she mentioned, "people are more relaxed, and children have smiles on their faces," expressing a desire to reunite with her son and bring him home. Her tenacity and hope for resolution continue to shine brightly as she navigates this tumultuous landscape in search of Austin.
