Mysterious Red Stream Raises Alarm in Suburban Buenos Aires

Residents fear pollution after a bright red stream is reported south of the capital, sparking environmental concerns.

A stream in Sarandí, Buenos Aires, has mysteriously turned red, alarming residents who suspect pollution from local factories. Environmental authorities are investigating the cause of the color change, which has a troubling history in the region.

A stream in Sarandí, a suburb located approximately six miles south of Buenos Aires, has taken on a shocking red hue, drawing immediate concern from residents and environmental experts alike. The unsettling color shift, deemed reminiscent of a "river covered in blood," has led many to speculate that industrial chemicals from nearby factories might be to blame.

Local resident Maria Ducomls noted that the ominous transformation of the stream was accompanied by an overpowering stench that jolted her awake—a smell described by local media as akin to garbage. The area has a well-documented history of water contamination, particularly in the Matanza-Riachuelo River basin, which is notorious as one of Latin America's most polluted waterways.

Authorities in Buenos Aires have already mobilized, with the environmental ministry collecting water samples for analysis following the alarming reports. Early theories suggest that the vibrant red color could result from an "organic dye," though definitive testing results remain pending.

Longtime residents report that the stream has frequently changed colors in the past, oscillating between shades of blue, green, and pink, sometimes even exhibiting an oily surface. Environmental expert Moira Zellner, who has firsthand experience dealing with pollution remediation in Buenos Aires, lamented the chronic lack of regulatory oversight that has contributed to the area’s ongoing environmental challenges.

Carlos Colángelo, head of the Professional Council of Chemistry for the Province of Buenos Aires, voiced his concerns over the potential for illegal chemical dumping, asserting that any company responsible for such an act would display a "total lack of scruples." As the investigation unfolds, community members and environmental advocates remain on high alert over the implications of this unsettling incident.
